Ruarri Fairweather
LLM, JD, GDLP, MAICD, FDRP
Special Counsel - Defence, Cyber & Technology, Apollo Law

Principal Advisor and Director, Heliswot

About Ruarri

Ruarri Fairweather is a senior legal, commercial and technology adviser with more than three decades of professional experience spanning information technology, cyber security, Defence, software, complex contracting, corporate governance and international business.

His career has developed alongside the technology industry itself. Beginning in information technology in the early 1990s, Ruarri has worked across organisations ranging from startups through to major multinational and publicly listed enterprises. His experience includes working with an Australian technology business as it grew from startup to listed enterprise, acting as a prosecutor for a building regulator, serving as Global Legal Counsel within Dimension Data, a multinational technology company operating across more than 150 countries, and taking responsibility for APAC legal and commercial matters for enterprise software company Pegasystems.

Ruarri subsequently joined CyberCX early in its development—receiving employee identification number 78—and built and led legal capability as the business rapidly scaled. During his time with CyberCX, the organisation completed numerous acquisitions and expanded from Australia into New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

A significant part of Ruarri’s practice has involved Defence, national security and cyber security. He has acted as lead legal counsel for Defence-related work, holds extensive experience with Defence contracting and complex technology programs, and has worked with ASDEFCON contracting frameworks, ITAR and export controls, security requirements, privacy, data protection and sensitive cyber operations.

His work has also included establishing governance structures for highly sensitive engagements, including the development of CyberCX's conflict-of-interest and probity framework to enable complex engagements involving traditionally separated areas of work while maintaining appropriate independence, governance and assurance. He has also had responsibility for legal and governance aspects of ISO 27001 information security management and for legal matters extending across Australian and international operations.

Ruarri's experience extends beyond traditional legal practice. He works at the intersection of law, technology, commercial strategy and operational delivery, allowing him to advise clients not only on what a contract or regulatory framework requires, but on how organisations can practically operate, negotiate and make decisions within it.

He is a regular contributor to the Australian technology and security community and has spoken at AISA CyberCon, Realms of Cyber and Canberra's annual Security & Government Expo. His technology and innovation activities have also received industry recognition, including a GRX25 Innovation Award.

His areas of particular focus include Defence and national security contracting, cyber security and incident response, artificial intelligence and emerging technology, complex technology transactions, commercial negotiations, privacy and data governance, intellectual property, corporate governance and strategic legal advisory.

Our alumni
We are proud of all the personnel we have hosted.

Apollo Law has hosted great individuals as locums, contractors, and paralegals. They include:

  • Silvana Santos, who was our Family Law practice leader from July 2025 to February 2026. Silvana has now founded her own family law firm, Inca Lawyers. We are happy to put you in touch. Apollo Law accepted the commercial opportunity to host Silvana while she transitioned from a national practice to operating her own firm.

  • Our Australian National University student personnel who got their ‘first break’ through Apollo Law. Some are now with international consultancies, the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade, and other top-tier employers.

Contact John if you would like details for any of our alumni.
